Field Notes

Description:

Agaric mushrooms, the largest of which was 20+ cms in diameter. Mostly tan to dark brown in colour, and texture smooth but leathery. Gills crowded, fine and quite deep. The largest was weeping dark fluid. A long shot, but could this possibly be Omphalotus nidiformis - Ghost Fungus? Perhaps an older specimen, but overall shape and colour matches images I've seen. However, where the gills meet the stip makes me hesitate. Ghost fungus gills appear to be decurrent (down the stipe), whereas the gills in this spotting appear to be adnexed (narrowly attached), perhaps even free. I didn't pay too much attention at the time. I can't explain the dark fluid. Perhaps a product of decay?

Habitat:

Subtropical rainforest section of the Bare Rock Track, near Mt. Cordeaux in Main Range National Park, SEQ. Very cool, damp, and well-shaded area on top of the escarpment. Often misty and drizzling rain. Four specimens found on a rotting log.

Notes:

This national park is World Heritage listed, and forms part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia. http://www.environment.gov.au/heritage/places/world/gondwana
