Rare but you definitely see pelicans from time to time in natural areas of NY. Not a zoo escapee, but wild. Pelicans may wander widely from their usual habitat. You'd be surprised what shows up in NY as it is located in the Atlantic Flyway, a major migration route for birds of the Americas. http://wildobs.com/place/New-York-USA/American-White-Pelican http://www.flickr.com/photos/mw13/5696485336/ http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2011/09/american-white-pelicans-at-jamaica-bay.html
A Pelican in NY, that is odd, perhaps escaped from a Zoo?
