Field Notes

Description:

A healthy Great Blue Skimmer that appeared while we were washing our car. They are one of the largest skimmers and are common in the eastern US. It may be a southern quirk, but we call them (and other dragonflies) Snake Doctors.

Habitat:

Near any still source of water throughout the warm season, even standing water in ditches. They are carnivorous and love to eat mosquitoes and their larvae.

Thank you! I felt like there had to be something out there I was missing, even with the Blue Dasher Western varient. It still didn't feel quite right. About to head out to work but I will get this (and several others) updated asap when I'm home later!
Beautiful dragonfly! The size, resting position and markings on the wings look to more closely match a male Great Blue Skimmer.
