Field Notes

Description:

Bald eagle nest is a massive platform, usually built in a tree. Both male and female build nest. Thought to mate for life. Return to same nest each year, adding more sticks, enlarging it to massive proportions, at times up to 1,000 pounds (450 kg). These bald eagles look so small compared to the size of their nest.

Habitat:

St Marks National Wildlife Refuge, St Marks, Florida.

Thanks ChristyHolland. I'll be sure to add my raptors and vultures to the Raptors of North America. I was thrilled to get this picture. I've seen eagles and nests separately but never eagles in their nest. You are right those eagles are big birds and they look so small next to that massive nest.
Great capture! I'm always amazed at how large the eagle nests are...but they ARE very large birds! ;-) I'd love you to add this spotting (and any others that apply, including vultures!) to the mission Raptors of North America: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627557
