Field Notes

Description:

The Beach Morning Glory, is a lovely creeping vine that grows on the upper parts of Kauai's beaches. The flowers are 2-3" across, and range from pale violet to a deeper fuschia, and make a nice spot of color on the beach.

Habitat:

This is a common vine over much of the world, because the seeds aren't killed by floating in sea water, and the vine shows up on tropical beaches everywhere, serving as a sand stabilizer.

Notes:

The specific name, pes-caprae, means goat's foot, but why it is called that i cannot fathom. The leaf, maybe?
