Description:
Thermophilous, sub-mediterranean moss that is becoming more frequently found in central and northwestern Europe as a result of global warming.
The plant can reach 2–6 cm tall.
The leaves are strongly curved away from the stem, without a hair point, and very crisped when dry. They are green, yellowish-green or golden, usually 4.5–5.5 mm long and have an obvious nerve and taper gradually to the tip from the sheathing base.
Most likely to be confused with Tortella tortuosa, but the last one appears on rocks while P. squarrosa grows on sandy or calcareous ground.
Habitat:
Spottted on sandy soil, at the path margins.
