Field Notes

Description:

~5 inch long fusiform fish. Golden brown with a dark spot at the posterior base of the dorsal fin and a black lateral line.

Per Wikipedia: Creek Chubs attain lengths of 2-6 inches with larger specimens of up to 12 inches possible. The genus name Semotilus derives from the Greek word sema (also known as dorsal fin), and atromaculatus comes from the Latin word "black spots".

Habitat:

Spring fed creek in a large pool, deepest portion was just over 24 inches. Substrate was a gravelly bottom.

Notes:

Fish was caught in a minnow trap, photographed and released unharmed.
