Field Notes

Description:

Big bluestem may grow to 1–3 metres (3.3–9.8 ft) in height. In fall the lower part of the stem takes on a blue sheen as it matures and from which the plant derives its name. Seed heads have 3-5 spikes on which the seed develops.

Habitat:

This plant has a wide distribution and is one of the five dominant grass species in North American tallgrass prairies. Its roots are long and run deep into the soil so it is relatively impervious to dry conditions.

Notes:

The seedhead reminds one of a bird's foot, hence its other common name "turkey foot."
