Common spadefoot
Pelobates fuscus
46.6908, 15.9393
Field Notes
Description:
This common spadefoot was cought by my friend in a trap which was set in the water during spring monitoring of Italian crested newt (Triturus carnifex).
It is not easily found, because it spends most of its life buried in the ground, usually up to 60 cm deep, and is only active at night.
The frog is also known as garlic toad, because it exudes a secretion wich smells like garlic, if threatened.
I hope someday I'll be lucky enough to see it in nature myself.
Habitat:
Pond in a forest near Mura river.
