Description:

The little blue heron is about 24 inches in size. Dark slate blue to purple nearly all year. Has reddish purple head and neck. Dull green legs and feet. Black-tipped blue-gray bill. Female same as male. The young look completely different as they are all white and turn blotchy white the first year and look like the adults the second year.

Habitat:

The little blue heron nests in large colonies near saltwater. A year-round resident here at St Marks National Wildlife Refuge in St Marks, Florida (off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico).
