Field Notes

Description:

This cute puffball was foraging in tall grass and reeds while making some calls. I couldn't resist taking some pictures in the late afternoon. They are mostly black and brown with some white markings on the upper side. The underside is mostly light gray. Whitish eyebrow and throat.

Habitat:

Spotted at the edge of a large marsh/wetland (pic 4) at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.

Thank you, Ava. Even as common as they are it's my first time to photograph one. Though I'm sure they are in decline here in western Washington where their marsh habitat is shrinking.
