Field Notes

Description:

a species of orangutan native to the island of Borneo. Together with the Sumatran orangutan, it belongs to the only genus of great apes native to Asia. The Bornean orangutan is an endangered species, with deforestation, oil-palm plantations and killing posing a serious threat to its continued existence.

Notes:

Spotted at the Semongoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, in Sarawak, Borneo, Malaysia. Many were rescued from private owners who kept them as pets - which is why, sadly, one of the oldest orangutans, in the photo, is forced to remain inside a cage, unable to even return to a semi-wild sanctuary.

He really looked sad - not like the others happily swinging from the branches
