Description:
This is a medium sized swallowtail (75 mm) that is basically white with several varying length bars extending from the front of the forewing towards the back. From the top it shows 2 red spots near the tail. (They were more visible as it flew away ☹) There is a clear bright red irregular stripe on the bottom side of the wings that extends from the leading edge of the rear wing to the tail. It has the typical long pointed tails common to all swallowtails.
Habitat:
This butterfly was seen perched on a leaf 2 meters above the ground alongside a trail to a jungle garden deep in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador, right along the Peruvian border (300 masl).
Notes:
Probably the most pristine butterfly I have ever photographed. It was a little breezy and it didn't want to open its wings. By blowing lightly from behind, I got it to partially open them.
