I'm stumped with this one... P. virginiana is the only one the grows to this size is in NC and it's not costal... but it does not look like it at all!! (I guess it can't be anything else, the flower matches, but not the inflorescence)

I usually identify them, but I put them up for identification until I can get on my PC and sort it out... This seems a hard one... but it's clearly in the Physostegia genus

looks like also Carolina Birds-in-a-Nest Macbridea caroliniana, grows usually in wet places
