Field Notes

Description:

A small diving duck with different hues of brown, lighter underneath and the head much darker. Adult females (hens) have a white band at the base of the bill, often a lighter ear region. The amber eyes differentiate it from the greater scaup (female), which has bright yellow eyes

Habitat:

Spotted at the Swantown Marina in Olympia, Wa.
