Field Notes

Description:

This bird is a difficult one to identify as it shows features of both Intermediate and Great Egret. In the Great Egret the gape line always extends beyond the eye, while on the Intermediate it stops below the eye. If you take a close look at pics 5 & 6 you can clearly see on 5 that the right side gape stops below the eye but on the left in 6 it appears to extend beyond the eye, I think this is just a crease or mark as the bare yellow skin stops below the eye. Both birds have a kink in the neck but it is normally more pronounced in the Great. There is also a difference in the leg length (tibia/fibia) but again this can overlap.

Habitat:

Small padi field in Rainforest.
