Field Notes

Description:

small orange cup shaped fungi with light hair and no or short stalk, apparent also comes in pink, see last photo, which may be a different species

Habitat:

tropical forest, swamp forest

Notes:

I spotted these growing in Golden Stream Corridor Preserve in southern Belize. Since it was raining a lot these became more and more abundant. From seeing just one or two growing on a dead branch on the ground to see entire dead trees covered with them, easily over 50 specimens on one small tree. I saw them in pink as well and also smooth with no hair.

Congratulations Dan, your Hairy Cup Fungi are our Spotting of the Day! Looking forward to see more from you from Belize (not to mention Antarctica and Iceland!): "Now these are some eyelashes! These striking Hairy Cup Fungi (Cookeina tricholoma) are our Spotting of the Day. Cup fungi (order Pezizales) are characterized by a disk- or cup-shaped structure which bears spore sacs on its surface. Cup fungi in the genus Cookeina are found around the world in tropical and subtropical regions. Cookeina tricholoma has conspicuously hairy cups".
