Field Notes

Description:

Beautiful brown corvid, size of pigeon, with azure blue wing panels and streaked crown and black "moustaches". Lovely and very smart bird, discreet and difficult to observe because it is always well hidden; and, in forests, often the first "sentinelle" to alert other animals of foreign presence by it's loud screams - this loud calls are the origins of this species in some languages, such is in bosnian/croatian 'Šojka kreštalica', meaning: "Jay screamer"...

Habitat:

Here, observed from my window in canopy of the tree in our backyard; peri-urban setting of Geneva suburbs, surrounded by pastures, forests and agricultural fields in Geneva lake valley.

Notes:

Here one of european sub-species recognized by that streaked crown. I recently posted a Caucasian race with black crown, here for the reference: https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/2018391371
