Zebra Longwing Chrysalis
Heliconious charithonia
26.2237, -80.1967
Field Notes
Description:
When a caterpillar is ready to pupate, it crawls to a surface where it can hang. It deposits silk at its posterior end and hangs for about a day. Then it quickly begins its transformation into a chrysalis.
Habitat:
I planted the passiflora suberosa vine, is on my front porch, to be able to record this process; in the same pot where I grow the vine I have a small Moringa tree where most ot the caterpillars hang from. This is the third time I am able to do it since December of 2015 the only step I've miss so far is the moment of eclosing, I am always too late.
