Field Notes

Description:

A long and stocky snake, approx 2m long. Dark back with light green or creamy underneath. Notoriously dangerous, with highly toxic venom.

Habitat:

Arboreal snake, found in rainforests from Equatorial Africa.

Notes:

At some point, while we lived in Kinshasa, my younger son became very interested in learning about African snakes (well, he still loves the subject but expanded it on all snakes...). My wife, of course, wasn't really too keen to trying to look for these beautiful animals in nature... So, as a sort of compromise, I found a great place with great team in Kinshasa to learn from them. And it was really a great experience; we , my son and I, learned a lot in a dozen of visits. So if you are around Kinshasa, the place is called "Le Jardin de Serpents" and their FB page is https://www.facebook.com/Les-Serpents-du-Congo, for amateurs...

Hello David129 and welcome to the Project Noah community! Thanks for your comments, and even more for correcting the IDs; and I hope you will be able to fully enjoy the site. Project Noah is a tool for people to learn about wildlife, share wildlife spottings, build nature journals and engage in citizen science. Here you will find a friendly community of people passionate about wildlife and conservation. I would encourage you to post your own spottings from natural habitats, and try to engage the community that way too. If you don’t know the organism and its name, describe at least the place where the organism was spotted in “Habitat” paragraph; as that information can help to identify it. If you need any more information about the functioning of the site, please visit our FAQ section here: https://www.projectnoah.org/faq We hope you enjoy our website and community as much as we do! Enjoy yourself, learn, share and see you around. Cheers Zlatan
Hi, unfortunately the ID is in error. This is Jameson's mamba (Dendroaspis jamesoni) and not a black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis). Cheers Dr David Williams
