Sonoran Desert Toad

A Sonoran desert toad at the Sedgwick County Zoo. These guys the largest toad we have North America with the exception of the non native cane toad. This species is super toxic, they secrete 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenin, and have paralyzed and even killed dogs that have eaten them. Interestingly this species absorbs water through their abdomen known as a seat patch which rapidly hydrates them by sitting in small puddles and such. A interesting adaptation that lets this amphibian thrive in a desert biome.
