Thanks Michael for the ID. Well researched. Interesting beetle with its truncated elytra. I've seen a few times usually without my camera or unable to get a good photograph. I don't usually catch them but if I see another I will to try to get a better picture.
It could be either one of the two closely related species "Rupilia" insignis or Cydippa balyi. A specimen of Rupilia insignis is shown here: http://bie.ala.org.au/species/urn:lsid:biodiversity.org.au:afd.taxon:068e9214-527e-4688-b674-0cb031c04fab There's a strong possibility that these two names turn out to be synonyms. Both are rarely collected and only known from a couple of localities in WA and NT.
