Description:

Smallest woodpecker of North America. This is a female Downy woodpecker, it does not have a red top notch of red feathers on its head. The Downy woodpecker is very similar to the Hairy woodpecker, but it is smaller in size, its beak is also smaller and its tail.The Downy Woodpecker is mainly black on the upper parts and wings, with a white back, throat and belly and white spotting on the wings.

Habitat:

Forested areas mainly deciduous trees.
