Field Notes

Description:

Pentatomidae; Eocanthecona furcellata Wolff, 1811. This nymph looks at first glance to be coloured orange and black. However, when it is viewed from different angles (when it is in direct sunlight) the black reveals itself to be a sparkling cobalt blue. My photos are not of sufficient quality to show this effect, but you can get a hint of it if you zoom in to the thorax.

Habitat:

This Shield Bug nymph was spotted on roadside foliage during a "bug hunt". The road is very narrow (barely wide enough for two cars to squeeze past each other) and there is a very sparse human presence - small houses spaced very far apart.

Hi Mark, thank you for your comment. My camera is very old now, bought in Jan 2017 and it was an old model then so I got it a little cheaper. I am such a poor photographer that it seemed like a waste of money buying an expensive one. Its OK for my requirements most of the time, but its kind of useless when it comes to iridescent insects. They always look so drab in my shots, then I see some great pictures on P.N. and regret being so penny-pinching. Regards, John B.
Nice. I find my camera totally misses some types of colour.
