Field Notes

Description:

Zingiberales; Zingiberaceae; Zingiber zerumbet (L.) Roscoe ex Sm. The first and last specimens are quite natural and "wild" and may be compared with the 2nd. and 3rd. specimens which were planted in our backyard for decorative purposes.

Habitat:

I have described specimens #1 and #4 as "wild" in that they are growing in a thicket where the boundary of our land meets with some small surviving patches of forest in between tracts of rice land with sparse human settlement.

Notes:

These plants appear to pretty much identical. If I were explaining the difference to children (as I often do with my bugs and occasionally plants), I would probably say that the wild ones look happy because they are free, but those in the garden also look happy because they are being cared for. :-)
