-34.99, 116.82
Field Notes
Description:
This is an adult Welcome Swallow. These beautiful little birds are "...metallic blue-black above, light grey below on the breast and belly, and rusty on the forehead, throat and upper breast. It has a long forked tail, with a row of white spots on the individual feathers (see pic 2)." (Wiki)
Habitat:
Standing on an old post in the water of the Frankland River.
Notes:
This is one of the adults that was flying around getting food to feed these three young ones (see spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/2107676002 )
I found this quite interesting: "Welcome swallows also can cooperate with other birds or companions to drive the insects together.[11] It can remember the insects’ activity routines to make its foraging be more efficient." (Wiki)
And this: "Sometimes they even occur at sea — the name ‘Welcome’ swallow comes from sailors who knew that the sight of a swallow meant that land was not far away." (Birdlife Australia)
