Field Notes

Description:

Brown Silk Moth about 2.5-3 cm long. The antennae are bright yellow and the legs are smokey grey. The wings have bands. The upper wings have a black spot with a white line.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light, Finca Argovia, Ruta de Café, Soconusco Area of Chiapas, about 2 hours north of Tapachula. Tropical forest, about 800 meters.

Notes:

Two other species of Hylesia have been spotted from Chiapas, a pink and orange one from the lowland coastal area (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/187956013/fullscreen) and a brown one with orange antennae and without bands or spots on the wings from the central mountains at 2,200 meters (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/34568007/fullscreen).
