Field Notes

Description:

From the "Field Guide to Wildflowers of Georgia and the Surrounding States" - found in freshwater marshes, river banks, and floodplains throughout Georgia, except the mountain areas. Grows 2 to 11 feet tall. Flowers are up to 5 inches across, usually pink or white, with 5 petals and a deep pink or maroon center. Flowers June through August.

Goes by the common names of "Smooth Rose Mallow" and "Marsh Mallow".

Habitat:

Georgia Piedmont / Indian Springs State Park - located in Big Sand Creek, just below the dam from Lake McIntosh.

Notes:

Cell phone photography

Unfortunately, I could not get closer to these specimens as they were located on the edge of the creek. The shore is covered in rocks, over which blackberry vines are growing. The unstable terrain provides homes for snakes. Coupled with the blackberry vines, it was not safe to cross to photograph the flowers better.
