Field Notes

Description:

Male (pictured) about 2.5cm (1") black, white and orange forewing. Dorsal surface of the hind wing is a striking royal blue with two orange and black eye-spots on each. The leading edge of the fore wing is white as are antenna.

Habitat:

Found in gardens near Kelimutu National Park on Flores Island below the volcanos. Flying low over the ground and setting occasionally.

Notes:

This one is a sub species called minagara found in Java, through the Indonesian archipelago. From a large sub family of Nymphalinae called True Brushfoots.
