Kodiak Brown Bear
Ursus arctos middendorffi
57.6953, -152.573
Field Notes
Description:
I saw it eating lots of different plants in this grassy patch. This was a fairly young bear, and still a bit skinny too. It will fatten up when the pink salmon start running up the river.
Habitat:
Grassy area outside of town not too far from the ocean and several streams
Notes:
Kodiak Brown Bears are one of the two largest bears in the world along with the polar bear. They are often twice the size of many other brown bears. They are especially fortunate to live on an island with plentiful salmon, wild berries and other edible plants, with only a small portion of the island is inhabited/accessible by road so these giants can flourish.
