Owlfly
Suhpalacsa sp.
15.4562, 119.921
Field Notes
Description:
Neuroptera; Ascalaphidae; Suhpalacsa Lefèbvre, 1842. Suhpalacsa sp. This Owlfly is difficult to identify to species level due to the lack of information on the internet. However, Wikipedia gives some good information on the Genus Suhpalacsa:" Owlflies are readily distinguished from the superficially similar dragonflies by their long, clubbed antennae; dragonflies have short, bristle-like antennae.... Owlflies are worldwide in distribution, occurring in warm temperate and tropical habitats; there are some 450 extant species." This latter remark pretty much serves as confirmation of presence in Philippines.
Habitat:
Spotted on the tangle of grasses and foliage growing wild in a rice field in between rice growing seasons.
Notes:
The cropped picture is the only usable photo I managed to get before the Owlfly flew away. The original, uncropped picture is shown here only to give a good idea of the habitat - much better than just words.
