Description:
A large butterfly, with a wing span ranging from 2 1/2 - 4 inches in size. The upperside of the male is tan to orange with black scales on the forewings. Females are tawny and are darker than the males. Underside of hindwings have wide pale submarginal bands and large silver spots.
Habitat:
Open, moist places including fields, valleys, and open woodlands. This is the most common fritillary throughout most of the eastern United States. I spotted this butterfly in a meadow at Boyd Audubon.
