Field Notes

Description:

This gregarious seabird is a large and powerful looking white-headed and white-bodied gull, reaching over 50 cm in length, and over 120 cm in wingspan. It sports silvery grey mantle, yellow bill, red dot on lower mandible, and pinkish legs (the leg colour came out as an important indice to IDing various species).

Habitat:

The Herring Gull is the most known european species. This large seabird lives in colonies and naturally occupies coastal rocky habitats on coasts of Atlantic and northern seas. During our stay in Brittany, we observed them on every coast and beach. However, beside rocky shores and beaches, these birds are also found in all urban areas we visited, and they are well adapted to cohabitation with human population.

Notes:

When we changed our holiday plans and decided to go and visit Brittany, one of my hopes was to learn more about gulls, terns and Laridae family; and see some species I have never encountered before... As it came out, in my opinion, Brittany is a perfect spot for that - there are 33 species belonging to Laridae family registered, 19 of them regular. Even though we missed Kittiwakes and many ternes, we enjoyed discovering Greater and Lesser black backed; Herring and Mediterranean gulls, ternes...
