Field Notes

Description:

Prairie Coneflower has one to several long-stalked flower heads at the top of the stem. Flowers have 4 to 12 droopy, wide, bright yellow petals, notched at the tip, around an erect, cylindrical cone. Flowers rise well above the leaves on ribbed stalks. Leaves are up to 6 inches long and deeply divided. Edges are mostly toothless, surfaces rough to stiff, hairs lie flat against the stem.

Habitat:

Spotted at Tamarac near the Visitor Center. Grows in dry fields, sun, prairies, along roads.

Notes:

This plant is also know as Mexican Hat, Upright Prairies Coneflower, Long-headed Coneflower. It belongs to the Aster family.
