Field Notes

Description:

Brown to purplish-brown color. The surface develops wide concave depressions that are surrounded by ridges. Individual fruiting bodies that are attached at a central point.

Habitat:

Growing on a white pine tree at Boyd Audubon. Fairly common in the eastern United States, this fungus usually grows on hardwood, especially oak. It's often found on dead twigs, but I spotted this fungus on a living tree.
