Beetle Fly
Celyphu sp.

Field Notes
Description:
This Beetle Fly (Celyphus sp.), which I first came across six years ago, does not seem to be very well documented. Wikipedia’s article, on the Family Celyphidae, gives some interesting snippets, particularly the explanation that the “protective shell” is an extended scutellum which gives the fly a beetle-like appearance, hence the common name. However, when I looked at the Wiki article on the Genus Celyphus, and saw the species list, all printed in red, which means that they have no pictures or information, my hopes of a complete identification evaporated. I have spotted eight Celyphus spp. in six years (they are listed in Notes) and, still, know very little about them. The first six Beetle Flies that I submitted to Project Noah, all had brown Scutella which were covered in minute dimples and fairly shiny. So, I am assuming that those six are all from the same species. The last one, on my list, looked very much like this one, in that the Scutellum is black, smooth and shiny with a white border which appears to run round the entire edge. So, I think it is likely that these last two are from a different species, but with such a drought of information, there isn’t much science here.
Habitat:
This Beetle Fly was spotted, in our backyard, on the leaflets of an Açaí palm (Euterpe oleracea). The plant identification is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%C3%A7a%C3%AD_palm.....
