Field Notes

Description:

Beautiful green and blue lizard .They can reach to 28cm with the tail. Is mainly insectivorous, but also preys on small lizards like the iberian wall lizard or large like psammodromus.

Habitat:

It was basking in the mid day sun in a ancient agriculture granite wall,near the rio Vez.

We're finally giving this lizard its well deserved spot in the sun António! It's our Spotting of the Day: "Endemic to the Iberian peninsula, this vividly colored Iberian Emerald Lizard (Lacerta schreiberi) is our Spotting of the Day! The male is striking with a green back with black spots and a bright blue neck, while the female is a duller brown-green with a smaller light brown head. Make sure to check the spotting for more images and to discover this lizard's habitat, granite walls in a mountainous rural area of Portugal". Thanks Ashley and Neil. These ancient agriculture little villages located in the north montains are amazing,they have a traditional way of harvesting the land that permit the wildlife live also arround,profiting of the farms "remains",grains in the floor,excrements of the cattle,etc...They have also have summer villages,call Brandas where they,in the past,live during the summer,they are located upper in the montains,it's our next goal :-)

Thanks Mark and Danièle,the photo does not make credit to his collours,"live" the collours are even more strike,a real emerald :-) the place is beautiful,it's near a rural mountain village,Sistelo,where they make a wood walkway above the river Vez,so we can see the beauty of the place without damage nature.
