Field Notes

Description:

green/greyish fungi attacked and killed this cicada

Habitat:

tropical rainforest

Notes:

Another fungi infested cicada found in Tangkoko Batuangus National Park.
Not sure if it is the same type of Massospora fungi that I had spotted on a cicada earlier.

I'm not sure if T. viride would grow on an insect.
Fungi on fungi, oh man, so many possibilities! I just might have to Mark!
Another possible complication is one fungi attacking another. You'll just have to take a microscope in your back pack from now on Dan. :-)
Thanks Chun and yes Mark, a dangerous place for cicadas. It may be an outside fungus or the cicada attacking fungus that is very far advanced, like you suggested, I'm not sure.
I guess we should also consider the possibility of a fungi simply attacking from the outside... like a green mold. This one doesn't seem to be bursting from the sectional margins so much but that could be just a matter of timing.
Wow!! A green one. Who would want to be a cicada with that around.
