Field Notes
Description:
"The Red-browed Finch is most easily recognised by its bright red eyebrow, rump and beak, on an otherwise green and grey bird. Upperparts are olive green with grey underneath." (Birdlife Australia)
Habitat:
Had flown to the tap looking for water near moist undergrowth near the picnic area at the Bunya Mountains National Park. I turned on the tap for a bit so there was some water and after moving away this little one flew down and had a drink :)
Notes:
According to Birdlife Australia, these Finches "also often associate with small insectivorous species, especially family groups of Superb Fairy-wrens, ...[which] is especially interesting, as the simple song of the Red-browed Finch sometimes sounds superficially similar to the contact call of the Superb Fairy-wren." As it was there were Superb Fairy-wrens also flitting about in the same location as this Finch!
The Bunya Mountains is part of my old stomping ground when I was growing up. My family would head up for a BBQ and I remember that area when there was no tar car park...we'd just park under a tree and run around...probably scaring all of the smaller birds away!
