Field Notes

Habitat:

Found in our vegetable garden.

Notes:

The dew on this morning made the numerous webs in our garden very visible. It also helped delineate the web architecture. I posted this spotting to point out the holes in the web. Many of the webs had them. Were these made by struggling prey or predators trying to prey on the spider.

Great spotting, Tom. The morning dew, as you say, really helps to make every detail stand out. I recently read a paper in which the authors captured and kept in cages a large number of spiders so that they could record details, and measurements of the webs. To make the webs more visible, they misted them with a light spray of water.
