Field Notes

Description:

Bright orange legs, white underside, black upper chest and a calico back. Interesting black and white pattern on the face. Color indicates that they are breeding adults.

Habitat:

Santa Rosa Island, a barrier island of northern Gulf of Mexico. White quartz sand with sea oats, bitter panicgrass and beach elder, which help to stabilize the shifting sand.

Notes:

Handsome little birds. They were keenly interested in the seaweed that had washed up on the shore.
