Description:
Anagallis arvensis is a very common wildflower, usually a winter annual, but in many cases it can survive a second year as well. Scarlet pimpernel flowers open only when the sun shines, and even close in overcast conditions.This habit leads to names such as "shepherd's weather glass". In Greece they used to stop their daily routine in the fields and return home when they saw the flower closing the petals.
It was spotted in Kato Gatzea, Pagasitikos gulf, Greece.
Notes:
The name "Anagallis" occurs from the ancient Greek word "αναγαλείν " , meaning that the herb was causing joy to the people, probably due to its use in folk medicine. Not really in use anymore, due to its toxicity.
