Field Notes

Description:

These catkins came out well before the leaves so I will have to wait a couple of weeks before determining the willow species.

Habitat:

Spotted at the edge of a pond in Kent, Wa.

Notes:

Several species of willows are often planted for ground or streambank
stabilization and the revegetation of coastal marshes or other moist sandy areas. It may also be used for wildlife habitat improvement, natural area
landscaping, windbreaks and screens in moist environments. Catkins are food for many small game and songbirds. Also a source of nectar and pollen for bees (pic. 3).
