Field Notes

Description:

Large brown bird with white head, prominent yellow beak. The winds are continuous on the beach, resulting in the ruffled feathers in the picture.

Habitat:

Perched in windblown trees at the edge of the seashore. Its nest is possibly the object at the far left of the second picture.

Notes:

This is one of a pair that has nested nearby for at least a couple of years (I've spotted them there before). When I was a child we never saw eagles; they were nearly extinct here. After DDT was banned they made a comeback, and this must be one of the approximately 400 breeding pairs in Oregon today. Though more common now, it is still a specially blessed day when we see an eagle.

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated shebebusynow!
