Description:
A very important native bee species for pollination. The Halictids are solitary bees which nest in the ground (sometimes in aggregates) and collect pollen to store at the bottom of their tunnels for their larvae. They also feed on nectar. Many species are metallic, however this one is shiny black with 4 yellow abdominal bands and grayish hair. This one is a bit battered. I brought it home to photograph and let it go again.
Habitat:
Found on flowers, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico 2,200 meters.
