Field Notes

Description:

Stout animal, about 12 to 13 cm for a female (bigger), 7 to 8 for a male in length. It has a broad head with wide mouth. Bulbous eyes with horizontal pupil. Skin with wart-like lumps, in particular on the back. Various colors - observed from dark green to red-brown.

Habitat:

Found hibernating in coniferous forest on high altitude (some 1200m), and in spring in this glacial lake.

Notes:

This year, on Earth's Day, we, my son and I, went to discover the lake Lamoura, a small lake in Jura mountain chain. The lake is of glacial origin, and situated on highest altitude in this chain. The visit was above our expectations, since we also came in the midst of "love season" for local amphibians - who just came out of their hibernation and densely populated this small lake. We spotted couples of these beautiful animals everywhere...
