OOOoooh 3D is cool. And I neglected to notice how small the nest was. The hornet nest is BIG! My bad.

Double-check me on this, but I think this may actually be a European Hornet nest. Don't freak out over the "hornet" label... these wasps are true hornets, but are not terribly aggressive. They will not come after you like our "bald-faced hornet ( - which isn't really a hornet at all... but I digress...) These European Hornets are quite tolerant of activity near their hive. Unless you kick or whack the hive or get too close, they will pretty much ignore you. So, Unless you have someone in your family that has a sting allergy, please consider leaving it alone in peace. Your veggie garden will appreciate it! (The adults pick off those nasty grubs and worms that eat your plants and feed them - pre-chewed-- to their own larvae!) I had several species of wasps... this was one of them.... living on my property, and I NEVER had to use pesticides. NEVER. And I was NEVER stung.
