Field Notes

Description:

I thought it was the Sameodes cancellalis, but I was wrong. This moth is about 3cm in wingspan.

The Sampaguita webworm, Nausinoe geometralis (Guenée, 1854), was recorded as a pest of Sampaguita (Jasminum sambac) in the Philippines for the first time in 2004.

Nausinoe geometralis is a species of moth of the Crambidae family. It can be found in western, southern and eastern Africa, from Ghana to South Africa and some islands of the Indian Ocean as well as in Australasia, Australia and India. A known hostplant of this species is an Oleaceae, Jasminum sp.

Habitat:

Backyard, spotted on the ceiling of the garage.

Great minds think alike :) Thanks bayucca and Nuwan! I saw Leana's similar spotting of Nausinoe geometralis - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/13811442. Also saw a Philippine Entomologist journal about this species they call the Sampaguita webworm, being a pest on Sampaguita (Jasminum sambac). - http://agris.fao.org/agris-search/search/display.do?f=2007/PH/PH0606.xml;PH2006000121
Crambidae, Pyraustinae, Spilomelini, Nausinoe geometralis. Quite a huge geographical range. Nuwan, what do you think about Geometralis?
