Field Notes

Description:

This plant grows to 1-3 feet tall. It has pinnately compound leaves bearing many small leaflets. Large yellow flowers arise from leaf axils. Each flower is marked with red and is followed by a narrow pod.

One of the common names for this plant is Sensitive-Plant because its leaves collapse when touched.

In order to grow, this plant requires the presence of microorganisms that inhabit nodules on the plant's root system and produce the nitrogen compounds necessary for the plant to survive.

Habitat:

Spotted in a meadow at Bent of the River Audubon.
