They are native to Europe, northwest Africa and central and western Asia. In the wild it is usually found in embankments, wooded boundaries or between crags in mountainous areas. In countries of South America like Chile was introduced from Europe, reaching great propagation in the south zone between Lenotoph and Magallanes, being frequent in La Araucanía and Los Lagos.The mapuches know it as "chollol-peshquin". In Argentina it occurs in the provinces of Jujuy, Neuquén, Río Negro and Tierra del Fuego, it is common to find it further north, especially in Colombia.

This plant is normally found in mountainous environments such as forest clearings, road and slope margins, embankments, cliffs, between rocks, areas of recent felling, and in general, it is found in humid and silicious lands (rarely in calcareous lands).

In Europe it appears more frequently near oaks, beech and fir, although it can also be seen with holm oaks and cork oaks in the south of the Iberian peninsula. It predominates in zones of temperate climates, of shade or semi-shade.

Its flowering time is from summer to autumn, depending on the altitude.
